7 Signs of Spiritual Deception Christians Should Recognize

Can something feel spiritual and still come from the enemy?

If there is something I’ve learned throughout the years, mostly the hard way, it is that not every spiritual experience, manifestation, sign, wonder, or person claiming to speak for God actually comes from Him.

My journey to Christ was not exactly an easy one. It began through a very strong spiritual experience—one that I may share on Blessed Compass someday.

Throughout the years, one way God sometimes spoke to me was through visions during prayer and dreams. Nowadays, He does not give me that kind of spiritual insight as often.

However, the enemy also began giving me false visions and dreams. I did not recognize them immediately. It took several torturous months before I understood what was happening.

Jesus warned us:

“Many false prophets will rise up and deceive many.”
—Matthew 24:11 (CSB)

For this reason, we need to be careful with spiritual experiences, especially when we actively seek them or depend upon people who claim to receive special messages from God.

That does not mean we should close the door to God or reject everything spiritual. Instead, we must learn to recognize His character, hear His voice, and test what we experience.

In this guide, we’ll examine seven signs of spiritual deception, why falsehood can sometimes appear biblical, and how we can remain open to God without blindly trusting every spiritual claim.
