How to Hear God’s Voice: A Biblical Guide to Discerning His Voice
How can we know when God is really speaking to us?
Discernment is essential for every Christian. I used to enjoy watching Derek Prince, and his teachings definitely helped me a lot back then.
I remember him teaching that one difference between God’s children and others is that they recognize His voice.
But here’s the problem: How do we hear God’s voice, especially with all the distractions surrounding us nowadays?
Sometimes, we may believe that God is guiding us when it is actually something we strongly desire. Other times, fear, excitement, or another person’s influence may affect what we think we are hearing.
Fortunately, God did not leave us without any way to recognize Him. One of the main ways He speaks to us is through His written Word.
When we read Scripture, we learn who God is and how He has acted throughout history. The world may change, but God’s character does not. He remains faithful, good, holy, loving, and sovereign over everything.
In this guide, we’ll look at the different ways God may guide us, how to test what we believe we are hearing, and why we should be careful before saying, “God told me.”
Key Takeaways
- Scripture is the clearest place to begin. God will not privately tell us to disobey what He has already revealed in His written Word.
- God may guide us in different ways, including through the Holy Spirit, prayer, mature Christians, and personal impressions. However, these do not all have the same authority as Scripture.
- A strong feeling, dream, vision, or open door is not automatically God’s voice. We should test it through Scripture, examine its fruit, seek wise counsel, and remain humble enough to admit that we may be wrong.
- Hearing God’s voice is ultimately about knowing and following Jesus. The goal is not to chase supernatural messages but to recognize His character, obey His teachings, and become more like Him.
What Do Christians Mean by “Hearing God’s Voice”?
Sometimes we hear someone saying, “God told me this or that.” When we hear that, we may imagine something big.
For instance, you’re praying in your room when suddenly you hear a loud cinematic voice saying, “Your Father wants you to stop eating fast food and head to the gym.”
I know that sounds a bit ridiculous, but I thought somewhat like that when I first became a Christian. I’m not saying God cannot speak audibly, although perhaps not about that particular subject. Still, most Christians mean something different when they talk about hearing God’s voice.
1. Encountering God’s Word in Scripture

Scripture is God’s inspired Word. He inspired human authors throughout history to write what He wanted to reveal to us.
Through Scripture, we learn about God’s character, commandments, plan of salvation, and how He wants us to live.
This means that if an experience or something another person says contradicts God’s Word, we should not assume it comes from Him.
2. Conviction Through the Holy Spirit
After Jesus ascended into Heaven, the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples at Pentecost. God did not leave His people without guidance.
The Holy Spirit dwells within believers, convicts us of sin, and helps us become more like Jesus. He works in our hearts so that we become more loving, humble, pure, and truthful.
Still, since we can misunderstand our feelings, what we believe is a prompting from the Holy Spirit needs to be tested.
3. Wisdom Gained Through Prayer

Prayer is a powerful gift that we Christians should use. Personally, I’ve noticed that some people may spend hours reading the Bible but very little time praying.
Of course, reading Scripture is essential. But prayer is like God’s workroom, where He changes our hearts and minds.
This does not mean we receive an instant download of information. But as we grow closer to God and start seeing the world more through Christ’s eyes, we begin to understand things differently.
4. Guidance From Other Christians
Sometimes God may use another Christian to tell us something we needed to hear or help us see what we were missing.
